A cryptocurrency investor has filed a lawsuit against the mobile operator T-Mobile. He accuses the company of insufficient protection of customer data, which led to the loss of 1.6 BTC through SIM card fraud.
Plaintiff Richard Harris alleged T-Mobile’s misconduct and accused the company of failing to adequately protect customer information, employing appropriate support staff, and of violating federal and state laws that resulted in the plaintiff’s loss of 1.63 BTC. Harris demands a jury trial.
This type of mobile phone number scam involves the purchase of a new prepaid SIM card. The attacker contacts a mobile operator, such as T-Mobile, and convinces a company representative to bind the potential victim’s number to a new prepaid SIM card. This is how a fraudster can gain access to bank accounts, cryptocurrency wallets and other confidential data.
“T-Mobile has had numerous incidents of customer abuse,” Harris said in a complaint.
Specifically, Harris claims that T-Mobile violated the country’s Federal Communications Act, which states that the cellular operator must protect “confidential customer information.” The plaintiff seeks compensation for a number of damages, including actual damages and penalties, as well as payment of legal costs.
