The port of Buenos Aires in Argentina will undergo technological upgrades and implement blockchain to increase the speed and efficiency of cargo handling and customs clearance processes.
According to a press release, the General Authority of the Port of Buenos Aires, subordinate to the Ministry of Transport of Argentina, has announced a tender for the modernization of its maritime logistics platform. The e-PuertoBUE platform handles the processes associated with ship freight, ship maintenance and customs liaison, relying in part on physical documents.
The blockchain implementation will act as a “digital notary”, preventing changes to information entered into the database, applying cargo tracking methods and ensuring the security of the infrastructure. In particular, the blockchain will handle documentation processes, including delivery information, electronic invoices and the declaration of dangerous goods.
Blockchain is increasingly being used to improve the efficiency of seaports. At the beginning of last year, the Port of Salalah in Oman began testing the TradeLens platform. The ports of Valencia, Algeciras and St. Petersburg, as well as the operator of container terminals in Hong Kong and the North American operator of container terminals Global Container Terminals, have also previously connected to this system. In addition, the platform is being tested by the customs services of Thailand and Jordan.
