Major Australian retailer On The Run (OTR) has entered into an agreement with the Crypto.com exchange to implement a program to accept cryptocurrency as payment for goods and services.
The company will work with Crypto.com to roll out its Pay Merchant product, while Sydney-based payment provider Datamesh will deploy terminals that allow consumers to pay with crypto, according to the OTR announcement.
OTR customers will be able to pay in more than 30 cryptocurrencies for transportation costs, fuel, auto products, services of service stations and food at 170 outlets in South Australia and Victoria.
Individuals will be able to pay in crypto using the Crypto.com app, which operates through payment service provider Datamesh. It is planned that the launch of the joint payment system will be completed in July 2022.
Peregrine Corporation, which owns the retailer, is one of South Australia’s largest private companies. The corporation is also going to accept cryptocurrency in its Subway, Oporto and Smokemart stores. Together, this will create Australia’s largest merchant network that accepts cryptocurrency payments.
The potential base of customers residing in the coverage area of the trading network and ready to make payments in cryptocurrencies can be, according to OTR, about 9.3 million people.
The Crypto.com exchange announced recently that it wants to establish its presence in the UAE by setting up a regional hub office in Dubai and will launch a massive recruitment campaign in the coming months.
