Leading Japanese PC game publisher Square Enix plans to give “maximum attention” to the development of blockchain-enabled games and collectible tokens in 2022.
Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda has released a letter of New Year’s greetings and plans for the company. Most of the letter was devoted to “decentralized games” – projects with blockchain and NFT support. Matsuda expressed the hope that such games will become a new trend in the development of computer games.
“If we call a one-way relationship, when developers just provide a finished product, centralized games, then starting in 2022, the inclusion of decentralized games in the portfolio will become our main strategy. The underlying technologies to support NFT and blockchain in games already exist and we have seen a significant increase in the adoption of cryptoassets in recent years. We will continue to closely monitor social shifts in this area, monitor users and grow the business accordingly. We may issue our own tokens in the future, ”wrote the President of Square Enix.
Matsuda said the company is closely monitoring the cryptocurrency industry and is looking for new opportunities to use blockchain and collectible tokens in their projects. Note that the field of blockchain and NFT-enabled games continues to evolve. So, for the III quarter of 2021, revenue from games with the support of collectible tokens amounted to $ 2.32 billion.
